There’s something wholesome and romantic about being able to watch someone make your food — it’s why we’ve fallen in love with chef’s tables and Netflix documentaries filmed in slow motion. You can access a little bit of that magic at Uncle Man’s, because there will be someone spinning your roti canai in the back-right corner, making direct eye contact with you as you walk in. They may even give you a little smirk, because they’ve got your number: they know you will be ordering the roti. And so you do: with beef rendang on the side, maybe, or our favourite, the curry chicken. There are stuffed rotis too, for the more adventurous, which are served with dhal — the sardines and onion one is an absolute classic, a surprising combination that works really well.
