Nan Xin Restaurant

If you’ve never had claypot rice before, Nan Xin is the place to try it. Usually served in a ceramic pot with a spouted handle, claypot rice is essentially a casserole, traditionally cooked over charcoal (though you won’t find that in many modern restaurants), with the heat allowing the rice to form a crunchy crust which hug the insides. It’s a warming, particularly comforting comfort-food dish that comes dotted with things like lap cheong (Chinese sausage), shiitake mushrooms, chicken, bits of pork spare ribs and salted fi sh. Here, we like to stick with the mushroom chicken, though if you’re feeling experimental, give the salmon and sausage a go.
