Since Emma Zhao opened the Mt Eden bakery and cafe Mibo in 2022, the crowds have not stopped coming. (A second store recently started operating in Wynyard Quarter.) Weekdays see a steady stream of customers arriving from the surrounding buildings and further afield, while weekends bring longer lines — intimidating, perhaps, but fast moving, and what you’ll find up at the counter is worth the wait. Most things here involve pastry, changing with the ebbs and flows of what’s in season and the whims of the bakers. You may find croissants layered with almond or pistachio paste, or savoury fillings like ricotta, feta, parmesan and cheddar. Danishes are finished with startlingly creative ingredients: Thai tea-infused cream, or mango sago, or duck fat confit potatoes with fresh grated truffle, all of which are as nice to look at as they are to eat. Do try the coffee jelly iced latte, which is even more fun than it sounds.
