With six years of operation, seven locations across the city and four new spots tucked into various Kings Plant Barns, Daily Bread seems to have secured its status as a go-to for Aucklanders in search of carb-loaded bites, great cups of coffee, and reliable loaves to whisk away — think kūmara sourdough, fermented oat sourdough, sprouted quinoa or a pillowy soft white. We have a particular soft spot for their flagship cafe, housed in an old bank building in Pt Chevalier. It’s cabinet food only here, but who needs a menu when the cabinet — lined with seasonally alternating doughnuts, cardamom morning buns, flaky pies, iced boston buns, fruity danishes, croissants and slices — is this good? On the right day, you might find the now-legendary custard squares, with their zingy layer of raspberry and vanilla flecked custard — a singular joy.
