Finalist, restaurateur of the year: Scott Brown & Jackie Grant

Any new Hip Group eatery is sure to excite and, thankfully, to satisfy the anticipation. Rosie’s not strictly new, but it’s a very different incarnation of the former cafe, Rosehip, and is wearing a beautiful new face. That chef Mike De Vries is enjoying the change is obvious — every dish he puts out is thoughtful in its conception and perfectly finished. He seems to create each (both in presentation and flavour) around a fine vegetable or legume purée, topped with bang-on-perfect layers of flavour and texture. The short wine list is really impressive, too. And then there are the things they don’t boast about on the menu but you might hear about from the excellent waitstaff: the pork is from their own pigs, all the grains are New Zealand-grown, and the cheese on the dessert menu is made by the chef in collaboration with a dairy.
