What I Ate: Tim Brown, Allbirds co-founder

Oct 14, 2019 Food

Tim Brown is a former footballer and co-founder of the extremely successful shoe company, Allbirds. This is what he eats.

It’s no secret that Auckland has great food. A fleeting (and busy) visit for the launch of our first Allbirds New Zealand store meant an opportunity to revisit a couple of my favourite eateries around the city.

Tuesday Dinner: Ortolana

The appeal of Britomart for our first Allbirds outpost in New Zealand is its sense of community and high calibre of retail and dining. Our new neighbour Ortolana is no exception. It’s a beautiful space, which feels like a mix between an upscale greenhouse and a laidback bistro, and the food is amazing. The farm-fresh seasonal vegetables are always a highlight, as is their range of New Zealand and Italian wines. Overall, a night of great people, food and drink – all with the new store in view just across the way.

Wednesday Lunch: Orphans Kitchen

A visit back home wouldn’t be complete without a meal with my parents. I’ve got to know the founder Tom over the last few years and the business he is building is a special one. I love the vibe of their Ponsonby space and the bread and butter is truly the best of all time. I have a lot of respect for the Orphans Kitchen team – they specialize in local New Zealand flavours and ingredients, and they’re passionate about the environment. Not to mention, the food is always delicious. I see a real kinship between their belief that making something sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing quality and our mission to make better things in a better way here at Allbirds.

Wednesday Dinner: Hilton room service

I took the opportunity to recover from the last of my jetlag and indulged in some room service. It came in the form of a shockingly good pizza, enjoyed in my room with a view of the harbour. Maybe I was just really hungry…

All week: The Store

Right next to the new Allbirds retail location, The Store was an easy place to grab a quick bite between meetings. The array of salads and sandwiches is great – my team also assured me that the coffee is excellent, though I’m strictly a tea man myself.

LOTS OF Cookie Time cookies

They’re a favourite and I consumed several while stuffing my suitcase with a nine pack to bring home.
