Nov 12, 2018 etc
Here’s what’s happening in food this November.
Morningside Precinct
Also coming up at the Precinct is The Living Gallery, a collaboration between Bombay Sapphire gin and Sydney’s The Barbershop bar in the Precinct’s rain or shine event space: The Glasshouse. The spacious venue will play host to an installation of interactive, immersive art and imaginative, multi-sensory cocktails, as well as Auckland DJ sets and creative food from the Precinct’s eateries. In future, keep an eye out for markets, community days and celebrations – with space for 400 people they certainly have the space.
Living Gallery collab, evenings Wed 21-Sun 25 Nov, tickets available at iTicket.

GG X Flamingo
From the same Sammy Akuthota that brought us Satya Chai Lounge , GG X Flamingo is a new tiki bar specialising in rum and whisky cocktails. The K Rd bar is hidden with an almost speakeasy-like secrecy behind a curtain but once you’re in there, the island-inspired raw wood and hessian sacks give the bar a more relaxed feel. Sammy has gone to great lengths for the house-made rums, infused with spices imported specially from India. The vegetable samosas are also shipped in from India – a slightly less usual bar snack choice that fits with the eclectic atmosphere.

Hello Beasty
The Viaduct’s latest Asian-fusion eatery, Hello Beasty, has been drawing crowds with its psychedelic decor and black cat mascot since it opened in late October. Chef and co-owner Stu Rogan’s menu features Chinese, Japanese and Korean twists on New Zealand favourites, as well as a drinks list featuring sake and umeshu alongside wine, beer and cocktails.

The Good Luck Coconut
November is clearly the month to open a tiki bar because The Good Luck Coconut is the second to pop up on our radar. Well, this one is really a bar and restaurant, but the tiki theme pervades the whole venue, from the tiki mugs to the staff’s Hawaiian shirts. The menu is a proudly locally sourced fusion of Asian and Pacific cuisine, offering both a raw section, featuring kokoda and sashimi, and a firepit section with beef and kingfish yakitori, as well as a vegetarian option of blackened butternut. The drinks list hails from New Zealand and Europe and, of course, the bar’s stocked with plenty of cocktail-ready liquor to be made into your choice of tiki cocktail.

Swan Hotel
Parnell’s Swan Hotel has reopened as an event space, gastropub and boutique hotel. The walls are whitewashed in a relaxed beachy way that retains the building’s character, courtesy of Paul Izzard, and lined with the bold pop art of artist in residence and creative director Sarah Jayne Kavali. The food is traditional pub fare, with salads, fried chicken and pizzas taking centre stage.

Night Noodle Markets
The yearly Night Noodle Markets are back and Victoria Park is getting ready to host 10 nights of noodle-goodness. Among the stalls will be Hoy Pinoy, House of Dumplings, Bangkok Street Food, White + Wong’s and Dim Sum Limited. Last year, the entertainment included fire dances and traditional Chinese performances – this year promises to deliver similar diversions, as well as the lanterns and fully licensed bar.
